Purpose of the Post
To provide a holistic approach to care, in supporting a shy and gentle young man, who has Autism, epilepsy and a learning disability, which affects his ability to verbally communicate. The young man loves being at home listening to his iPod and using his iPad but also enjoys getting out and about. This includes going to the cinema, bowling and crazy golf as well as having walks in the park and a visit to McDonalds. The PA will need to be kind and patient and encourage the young man to come out of his shell. Once this has happened and he feels happy and comfortable with you, you will find he has a great sense of humour. Your role as his PA will be to enable him to access the local community and support him to go shopping and attend different appointments such as the hair dresses and chiropodist.
Roles and Responsibilities
To facilitate and support the individual in decision making, promoting choice, involvement and control.
Ensure the individual’s needs are met through planning and reviewing.
Support the individuals’ participation in social, leisure, educational opportunities with the local community.
To have a shared interests.
To be supportive and understanding when assisting the individual through his seizures.
To communicate in a professional manner any concerns you may have.
Provide relevant and appropriate information to mum to ensure the safety and well-being of the individual.
Interact and participate with the individual’s development of self-help skills, supporting to him to reach his potential for independence.
To maintain a high quality of care and support which meets the physical, emotional and social needs
Establishing a positive relationship and always offering an unconditional and positive regard
Attending to practical matters in relation to personal care
Providing emotional support at times of difficulty or stress
Being ambitious in a supportive way by helping to achieve goals and optimising potential.
Qualifications & Person Specification
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.
A companion/support worker who has a sense of fun and ambition. Who can assist with the personal, social and practical care of the individual.
Who understands the barriers faced on a daily basis for disabled people and willingness to sensitively challenge behaviours
Has the ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved care.
To be a companion who is respectful of an equal working relationship
Experience in Epilepsy
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to have clear and effective communication.
Be able to assist/supervise when the individual requires support with bathing – when required.
Be able to demonstrate discretion when supporting the individual
A willingness to travel to support the delivery of the individuals needs.
To ensure the safety of the individual at all times.
To complete and maintain accurate timesheets/mileage sheets
You have a responsibility as an Employee to report all accidents to the employer immediately. You must record all details in the accident book.
You have a duty to report defects and / or hazards which may give rise to an accident.
